Dental Implant Broken Screw Retrieval Method 3- Biomet 3i case

Auteur original : Gerard Cuomo DDS

It is not uncommon for a patient to experience a loose or fractured dental implant screw. Many of these patients are faced with decisions of having the implant fixture surgically removed, the site grafted, and a new implant fixture placed. Reasons for screw loosening or fracturing are speculative at best. A decision must be made as to what broken screw retrieval method should be taken. Many implant companies have broken screw retrieval kits available for dentists to use. Other methods include the use of rotary instruments that run in reverse mode, screw slotting techniques, and hand-rotary instruments just to name a few. My clinical experience and methods include immediate pre-soaking the head of the fractured screw and the internal aspect of the implant fixture with tarter and stain remover solution for 20 minutes. Then use a 25 gauge blunt-end syringe needle to gently rotate the fractured screw out avoiding the chance of permanently damaging the internal threads of the implant fixture. A 20 gauge blunt-end suction needle is also use to help remove the T and S solution and can be used to assist in the final removal of the broken screw. I try to avoid the use of power instruments unless it is absolutely necessary. Dr. Cuomo
